Illustrate Your Life for AALL & Create

Hi Everyone
I'm sharing with you today my latest make as guest designer for AALL & Create and this week is Journals/Mini books week. I took the opportunity to change the cover on a plain brown covered journal that I own.

To complete my alteration I have used Stencils #Illusion designed by Fiona Paltridge and stencils #48 Tribal Lines, # 28 & #26 all designed by Autour de Mwa, also a couple of stamp set designed by Tracy Evans #34 & #165 Numbered Pencils

The first thing I did was to take the journal apart so I had the covers loose from the wires. I then set about making the background covers and I went for my gelli plate.

I have used a technique I keep seeing people playing with out there on social media and just wanted to have a go. It meant I had to dig out my Pan Pastel collection which I haven't used in ages. You then apply the pan pastel through your chosen stencils and I have used a couple to fill up the 8" x 10" gelli plate. Once you have all your pastel colour in place I brayered over a very thin layer of white acrylic paint, I have leant by my mistakes and you need to ensure that the layer of paint is really light or else it won't pull of the pastels underneath. I got a couple of prints from one lay down of pastel, so to get the covers I needed I repeated this again.

I then covered each of the brown covers

I had to hand cut each of the holes out to allow the wires to go back through and with a tiny pair of scissors that really was a labour of love!!

Next was to build up my design on top of the background.

Using the Illusion stencil I coloured it with a gradient effect of colour using Distress Archival Inks using the colours shown.

I then added some stamping in a couple of the distress archival colours and added a little black. I also went around the image with a black fineliner pen and added a little shadow with a dark grey coloured pencil.

I stencilled the words from the Illusion stencil using black archival and also die cut a speech bubble to stamp the words 'Illustrate your Life' which I took from the stamp set #165 and added it to the figure.
Last addition was to add the lines which were added using turquoise acrylic paint.
All that remained was to put the covers back onto their wires to put the journal all back together.

  1. Such a cool technique with the Pan Pastels - I've done a similar thing with paint, but how lovely to have more options! Fabulous covers - that silhouette is amazing.

  2. What fabulous covers Amanda, I love them! I've seen the pan pastels being used too so I really must give it a try - unfortunately I know how deep I've buried them lol. Have a very happy week, Sue x
